Mention Yamaha’s CP2 parallel twin, and words like punchy, engaging, and fun are never far behind. Whether powering the MT-07 naked sport bike or the versatile Ténéré 700, this beloved engine strikes a perfect balance between accessible and exhilarating, straightforward and sensational.
Much of this appeal stems from the CP2’s torque-rich power and characterful exhaust note, though its technological pedigree hasn’t been its strong suit—until now. For 2025, Yamaha has modernized the MT-07 and Ténéré 700, keeping the CP2’s 80 mm bore, 68.6 mm stroke, and 689 cc displacement while adding Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) for a smoother, more responsive throttle feel and ride-by-wire tech. This update introduces ride modes: Street, Sport, and Custom for the MT-07, while the Ténéré offers Sport and Explorer modes. Both bikes also benefit from switchable traction control. The MT-07 even gains acoustic amplifying grilles that enhance the induction sound experience, while the T7’s redesigned intake duct boosts torque and low- to mid-range power.
The upgrades extend to the chassis, which has seen overdue enhancements. The MT-07’s standard telescopic fork is now replaced by a 41 mm KYB inverted fork, allowing for radially mounted calipers that improve braking consistency and rigidity. Additionally, the chassis now sports lightweight SpinForged wheels and an upgraded KYB rear shock. Meanwhile, the Ténéré’s 43 mm KYB fork, already offering rebound and compression adjustability, now has a preload adjuster at the fork tube’s top for more precise tuning. A redesigned KYB rear shock provides increased stroke and better load absorption, improving confidence both on and off the road.
Both models also get a 2025 facelift. The MT-07 adopts a new headlight assembly that aligns it visually with its MT siblings, along with a slimmer tank, updated side covers, a trimmer tail section, and a reshaped seat for a minimalist aesthetic. The Ténéré 700 moves closer to its rally roots, featuring a quad-LED headlight, angular bodywork, color-coordinated handguards, and a flatter seat.
